The SM/TC role is a team member who has the responsibility to help the team achieve its goals. They do this by teaching and coaching SAFe Scrum and SAFe Team Kanban, and by supporting SAFe principles and practices. Additionally, many team leads and scrum masters pursue certifications through professional organizations, such as the Project Management Institute or the Scrum Alliance.
The role of the Scrum Master is to create a self-organizing team that requires identifying clear boundaries and protecting the team from outside influences for which the team is not yet ready. Having a leader responsible for making decisions kills the collective ownership of the team. Responsibility is not inferred by any specialisms a team member may have. The Scrum Guide makes it clear that there are no exceptions to this rule.
Straddling both worlds created problems for my team and made it difficult for me to be effective in either role. Rather than repeat all the Tech Lead activities and responsibilities , you can see that just because a software team is using Scrum, it doesn’t make this role redundant. It’s also important to understand that scrum roles are not the same thing as job titles. Having a leader could mean that you don’t have to do anything the leader is not telling you to do. It also means that you are expected to follow, NOT to take initiative and make suggestions. It assumes that the team will be empowered and trusted to make the right decisions that are related to the value a product can deliver to stakeholders. There are 3 roles, not job descriptions or job titles, described that give specific individuals the ability to focus on different aspects needed for a team to be successful. That is interesting when you described the team leader’s role. In Scrum we want the whole development team members to have a leader mentality, we want them to be self-directed, self-motivated and inspired.
The Scrum Master should be able to set up the task board, establish workflows and move tasks, and help team members move tasks properly. Scrum Masters should develop advanced skills on project management task boards and collaboration and documentation software, including calendars. The Scrum Master is the glue between the product owner and the development team. The relationship between the Scrum Master and the product owner is key to success.
